Imaginary Lines Quartet, Free jazz improvisation
“The Imaginary Lines Quartet is an improvised free jazz group made up of Walter Gershon from Philadelphia on saxes and percussion, and Canadians Jonathan Kay on saxes, Brandon Davis on bass, and Joe Sorbara on drums. Taking its name as a point of departure, the trio works across imagined (political) boundaries, treating boarders, categories, and fixed identities as something to be transgressed as a condition to co-create new flows of sonic becoming.
Group members Walter Gershon, Joe Sorbara, and Jonathan Kay met during the 2023 Sound, Meaning, Education Conference, co-hosted by the International Institute for Critical Studies in Improvisation (IICSI) at the University of Guelph. They first recorded together at Silence in Guelph, Ontario on May 22–23, 2024 and released their first record, “”The Passport Sessions”” on Bandcamp (https://imaginarylinesquartet.bandcamp.com/album/passport-sessions).
