The Next Set –

January’s edition of The Next Set will be guest hosted by bassist Dan Fortin, bringing together an inspired intergenerational lineup that highlights both emerging voices and established artists from the University of Toronto community.

The band features Ruby Roussain on piano (3rd-year U of T student), Aidan McConnell on drums (recent U of T graduate), alongside U of T faculty members Michael Davidson on vibraphone and Dan Fortin on bass. Expect an evening of adventurous interplay, original music, and deep listening as young artists share the bandstand with mentors in a collaborative, forward-thinking setting.

Presented by JUNO Award-winning drummer Ernesto Cervini, The Next Set is a monthly series at The Emmet Ray that brings together seasoned professionals and emerging voices in the Canadian jazz scene. Each concert features a rotating cast of musicians, pairing Cervini and a fellow pro with two outstanding young artists

Expect a dynamic set of originals and spontaneous interplay as these young musicians step into the spotlight with two of Toronto’s most experienced rhythm section players. It’s the perfect blend of mentorship, discovery, and high-level jazz making—only at The Emmet Ray.
